EndNote’s Notes and Research Notes fields – keeping your notes private

A lot of my work involves collaboration, and EndNote is great for allowing citations to travel with the word document between collaborators. However, one thing that is not well documented is that only file attachments and the ‘Notes’ field are stripped from citations in the traveling library. Anything in other fields, in particular the ‘Research Notes’ field, can be accessed by anyone importing the traveling library into their own EndNote library.

So if like me you tend to keep your candid thoughts, a summary and key quotes about the reference in EndNote I’d highly recommend putting them in the ‘Notes’ field rather than the ‘Research Notes’ field so that they remain with you when you share documents with embedded citations.
